Dashain Festival in Nepal

Ghatasthapana is the starting day of Vijay Dashami festival. ‘Ghata’ is pot either made up of clay or metal and ‘sthapana’ is to establish which mean that to establish a pot. Kalasthapana word is also used for Ghatasthapana. ‘Kalas’ means a type of water vessel. This day falls on the first day after no moon day ( the bright forthright) of Ashwin month of Bikram Sambat calendar. In this day Kalash symbolize Goddess Durga. After all the Vijaya Dashami is celebrated to worship nine goddesses( commonly known as Durga). Pooja room is mostly used to place Goddess Durga. The pot is filled with cow dung, soil or sand collected form river bank on to which seeds is spread. Or barley seed along with sesame is planted. There is time ( certain favourable moment) which is declared by priest to start Ghatasthapana day. Priest chants mantra, requesting goddess to bless kalash with resting herself for ten days. The plant which grow within 10 days is called Jamara and it used for worshipping goddesses. Every day food items, abir, kumkum, flowers and pure water are offered to the kalash or Ghata.Diyo is burnt all nine day. People who worship this ghata should take shower and wear clean clothes for puja. Only family are allowed in puja room. Weapons arw also placed in front of goddess picture or idol. How to plant Jamara People usually plat barley and sesame seeds but some people plant seven types of grains like barely, wheat, maize etc. Process of transplantation starts after decoration of Kalash. People chant mantras dedicated to goddesses Durga or shakti. Generally people read Chandi or Durga Kavach during nine days of dashami. After 10 days seeds are grown into jamara. This is cut and after offering to goddesses , people put on the head in tenth day of vijaya dashami as a prasad of Durga Bhawani.
