Ghanta Karna festival is celebrated in the month of July or August. This festival is celebrate by worshipping and offering sacrifices to serpents, demons and other super natural and natural elements like wind, water and fire since the time of inception to get rid of evil powers and the legendary. According to the belief,’ ghantakatna was demon name and spreading fear amongst the people.

Ghantakarna festival is celebrated in the month of July or August. Mainly newars celebrate this festival by worshipping and offering sacrifices to serpents, demons and other super natural and natural elements like wind, water and fire since the time of inception to get rid of evil powers and the legendary. According to the belief, ‘ ghantakarna was demon name and spreading fear amongst the people and also believe that this day is end of Ghanta karna.
Dummies of the demons are made and erected at middle roads. Local people decorated by using mud pots, put on dirty black clothes etc but in Bhaktapur Ghantakarna is made by straws. The face of ghantakarna is decorated as demon face. At the end of the day, the dummy is dragged to river bank and burnt. Children make dummies of ghantakarna by using dry straws, bamboos, branches of plants like dry maize plant. Children are free to collect money that day and use it to buy sweets and distribute among the community. People sing folk songs and play traditional music for enjoyment. Dummy demons are burn and made to roam the streets and throw with ghantakarna in river bank. People moves around the effigya for three times and drag Ghantakarna to nearby river

According to the legendary, when little water and violent storm brought illness due to diseases, people blamed evil spirit. People believed it to be because of the absence of Nine Durgas. And evil spirits were free to enter into the city to cause such troubles. People wear iron metal ring in fingers and ankle. It is said that this festival was celebrated from Lichhavi era in the history of Gopal Bansha.
It is also said that demon(Ghantakarna ) with a pair of bells on his ears used to terrify people by killing them. Thats why he was called Ghanta (bell)Karna (ears) to identify him by his bells on the ear.
Clever frog help to kill the demon successfully. So in this day people also worship frog.
