Sushila Karki, who has become the head of the interim government, was Nepal’s first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In the more than 65-year history of Nepal’s judiciary, she was the first woman to hold the position of Chief Justice. Following her formal appointment, she has now become the first female Prime Minister (interim government head) in the 75 years since democracy was established in Nepal.

Karki was born on Jestha 25, 2009 B.S. (June 7, 1952) in Biratnagar. She completed her B.A. from Mahendra Morang Campus in 2028 B.S. (1971), her M.A. in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in 2031 B.S. (1974), and earned her law degree from Tribhuvan University in 2034 B.S. (1977).

From 2042 to 2046 B.S. (1985–1989), she taught at Mahendra Multiple Campus in Dharan. Born into a family closely associated with the Koirala family of the Nepali Congress in Biratnagar, she married Durga Subedi. She has often said that her husband Durga played a significant role in her journey from lawyer to Chief Justice, especially through his support and integrity.
